What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a well-known, high-performance ingredient and an important component of the dermis. This powerful humectant, known for drawing moisture from the air into the skin, is renowned for its ability to retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water, thus helping the skin retain water, keeping it hydrated, supple and plumped. Think of the hyaluronic acid molecule as a water magnet. Contrary to what its name might suggest, hyaluronic acid is a very gentle ingredient, making it suitable even for those with eczema-prone or sensitive skin.
Hyaluronic acid does not add lipids to the skin, just hydration. Imagine your skin is like a sponge. If you fill it full of water, it’ll be plump and soft. If you leave it to dry out, though, it’ll soon become rough and dry again. The same applies to your skin, i.e. if you stop using hyaluronic acid, you’ll stop seeing the benefits.
Since hyaluronic acid acts as a water magnet, it should always be applied to damp skin to maximize its hydrating effects. After applying a hyaluronic acid serum, following up with a moisturizer helps lock in the moisture and enhance the benefits.
What happens to hyaluronic acid naturally present in our body as we age?
Over time, the hyaluronic acid naturally present and produced in the skin diminishes. As a result, the skin is unable to retain moisture. This leads to a loss of firmness and elasticity, and the development of fine lines and wrinkles.
